Basically, the difference is although there are exceptions on both sides that English poets tend to write formally, and stick to realism, often using irony, whereas Irish poets tend to be more free in their versification, and to value the imaginative more — often straying into a territory I call alternative realism.

Of course, Beckett chose to live abroad, as I have done for most of my life. I find it especially pleasing to be so accepted abroad, and to be as widely translated as you pointed out. I was particularly delighted by the response to the German book, Rosa Milch.

You have expressed your admiration towards Trakl, re-writing one of his famous poems. What did you learn from Expressionists?

Oh, quite a lot. To go for images.

Am fost instantaneu atras de poezie — de sunetul şi de misterul ei. Îmi amintesc în special câteva dintre poemele cu fantome ale lui Walter de la Mare, precum şi poemele timpurii cu zâne ale lui Yeats. Un alt motiv a fost că unul sau doi dintre copiii faţă de care eram mai apropiat scriau, la rândul lor, poeme — obişnuiam să ne arătăm roadele muncii unii altora. Ale mele erau adesea mulate direct sau indirect după poeme peste care dădusem şi care îmi plăcuseră la ore.
